Alex McFry is a tall, gay filmmaker who survived and thrived growing up in a microscopic town in Alabama. He writes, directs, produces, and acts when he's not obsessing over a new board game...
He has been churning out LGBTQ+ content of all shapes and sizes for the last fifteen years via McDorky Productions, a media production company he created that plays on his last name and the nicknames of several heartthrobs in Grey's Anatomy (he's a Shonda stan.) He's body-positive, sex-positive, and yes, HIV+, too — his short film about his diagnosis landed him at Cannes.
Alex believes in bringing diverse voices to the forefront of our world by using both his experience as a filmmaker and his film education to help amplify them — that, and knowing when to shut up and listen to those voices and the incredible stories they tell.
Alex currently works as a producer of commercial content by day and as a director of narrative, queer-focused content by night. He's created over thirty films, most recently the pilot for "queerbnb," a series that he created with his directing partner Alex Engel. The two met through the graduate network of their alma mater, FSU's College of Motion Picture Arts.
In 2019, Alex was the recipient of one of two of the first Colin Higgins Ambassador Awards, granting him a scholarship to attend the 72nd Festival de Cannes. While there, one of his queer films, HEADS UP (2018) was chosen to be in the Pavilion's LGBTQ Emerging Filmmakers showcase.
Alex currently lives in Los Angeles, California, and plans to continue telling stories of those underrepresented in entertainment. For inquiries (or just to say hello) email him at amcfry@mcdorkyproductions.com.
